Internet and SIM card:
As soon as you arrive in China, make sure to get a Chinese SIM card, such as China Mobile or Unicom. I personally recommend China Mobile. Without internet, you can hardly do anything! Of course, you can use Wi-Fi or a temporary eSIM, but it is much more convenient to have an official SIM card. If you can, buy a SIM card from a shop outside the airport; it is usually cheaper.

2. Apps and Payment:
AliPay is a must-have. With your passport and Chinese mobile number, you can sign up and from there you can do almost everything with your phone, from buying coffee and metro tickets to taxis, booking hotels and ordering food. You don’t even need a separate app to hail a taxi — there are options within AliPay like Amap, Didi and Haluo that you can easily flag down and get a taxi to your destination.

3. Communication and messaging:
In China, WeChat is like WhatsApp or Telegram and is used to communicate with locals or colleagues. Remember that apps like Google, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, and email are filtered in China. So be sure to bring a blocker; usually the same blockers you use in Iran also work in China.

4. Power and Adapter: The power outlets and voltage in China are different from Iran. Be sure to bring a type A or E converter so you can charge your phone and electronic devices.

5. Medicine: The dosage of medicines in China is usually lower, so I recommend bringing your personal medicines for colds, stomachaches, headaches, etc.

6. Money:
It is better to get Yuan before your trip or bring Euros instead of Dollars, as currency exchange is a bit difficult for Iranians. Of course, many hotels have the option of exchanging Euros.

7. Food:
If you are looking for halal food, search for “清真餐厅” or “Halal restaurant” on AliPay or Amap. In big cities like Shanghai and Beijing, there are plenty of halal restaurants; from traditional Chinese Muslim cuisine to Arabic and Turkish restaurants, like Sultan or Eli Falafel, which have flavors close to Iranian tastes.

8. Shopping and markets: Many people assume that because China is the manufacturing hub of the world, shopping there is cheap; however, the reality is that buying in bulk is usually more expensive, especially in big cities. For cheaper shopping, you can visit local markets or wholesalers. For clothing, stores like Himaxx and for food, Hotmaxx are good options.

9. Sightseeing:
If you are in Shanghai and have limited time, be sure to visit famous attractions such as The Bund, Yu Garden, and Shanghai Tower. All of them are easily accessible by subway or taxi.

10. Final tip:
Almost everything in China is done on your phone — from paying and getting directions to ordering coffee. So make sure your phone is charged, has internet, and has AliPay set up. If your phone runs out of power, don’t worry; you can rent power banks for a small fee in various parts of China and return them after you’ve used them.

By following these simple tips, you can be sure that your trip to China will not only be easier and more carefree, but will also be full of fascinating experiences, familiarity with a new culture, and memorable moments.

If you are planning to travel to China for one to two weeks, there are a few things you should know to make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable. 1.
