The specialized meeting “Opportunities and Challenges of Iran-China Cooperation in the Field of Oil and New Energy” will be held as the sixth meeting in the “Cross-Border Narrative” series of events, with the participation of prominent Iranian and Chinese professors and experts. This scientific event will be held on Monday, October 11, 2021, at 2:30 PM Tehran time, with the aim of examining the strategic and economic dimensions of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. Keynote speakers will include Abbas Maleki, full professor at the Faculty of Energy Engineering at Sharif University of Technology, Younes Noorollahi, professor at the Faculty of New Energy and Environment at the University of Tehran, and two Chinese researchers and experts, Qi Yan Shumin, associate professor at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, and Zhao Jing, assistant professor at the Institute of Middle East Studies at Shanghai International Studies University. This meeting is an opportunity to exchange views on the use of Iran’s oil capacities and China’s investment in the development of renewable energy infrastructure such as solar power plants, as well as to examine strategies for developing cooperation in the context of international sanctions. The meeting’s secretary is Dr. Amir Mohammad Esmaeili, Secretary General of the Iranian Institute for Belt and Road Studies.
A review of past cooperation and mutual needs indicates that this meeting could lead to a detailed assessment of the future direction of energy relations between the two countries. Iran seeks to attract foreign investment to develop oil and gas fields, transfer technology, and circumvent sanctions by ensuring a stable market for its oil, while China, as the world’s largest energy consumer, seeks a stable supply of oil and gas as well as advancing the “One Belt, One Road” strategic plan, which Iran is on the path to. Given the presence of the Deputy Minister of Investment and Development of SATBA at this meeting, it is expected that there will be a special focus on the development capacities of renewable energies and the attraction of Chinese capital and technology in this sector.
